This old picture from my Walker days shows two gentlemen who still impact my life today: Brian and Roger, owners of Everett Auto Parts and Distributing. (I honestly can't remember their last name—CRS, you know.)
Here they are in their warehouse, where I spent time helping them manage inventory, advising on new products to add (!), and creating promotions to pull more product through to their customers.
They were skeptical the first time I walked into their warehouse. (Can you relate? Walking into a new opportunity where you're not quite trusted yet?)
But over time, we built a strong relationship — one based on trust, results, and genuine care. I remember visiting Roger in the hospital during his battle with cancer, shedding a few tears as it became clear his battle was coming to an end. I was honored to be part of Roger and Brian's journey - both personally and professionally.
People do business with people.

Shift #1: Focus on the Customer’s Win (Not Yours)
We’ve all been "sold to" by someone more focused on closing than helping. It never feels good.
You might know everything about your product... but your customer only cares about one thing: What’s in it for me?
Ask better questions. Dig deeper. Don’t assume you know their "win" — uncover it.
Quick story:
A prospect wasn't interested in upgrading his equipment... until the salesperson (one of our clients) kept asking thoughtful questions. Finally, the real motivation came out: the prospect wanted to retire and sell the business. Newer equipment would boost the sale price.
The line that closed the deal?
"You can buy a bigger boat!"
Lesson for you:
When you focus on their dreams, not your pitch, everything changes.
Shift #2: Fear is the Real Sales Killer
Let’s talk about the real F-word. (No, not that one — fear!)
Fear shows up when you:
- Put off follow-ups
- Avoid making calls
- Talk nervously at people instead of with them
- Stay quiet when you should speak up
In Module 2 of my course, I take you through my first sales call:
I pulled into a lumberyard, panicked, and literally drove away. But the next day, I came back — and got the appointment. That moment changed everything for me.
Here’s a tool I still use today:
“I can do this. I can do this. I can do this.”
Say it. Believe it. Act through it.
